With an endless stream of virtually unknown artists covering well-known songs, it’s easiest to simply look away without giving them a second thought. Unfortunately, in most cases, the songs are best left where they lie: the tomb of time. But every once in a while, one will catch my eye. That is what happened when I stumbled across Robots With Ray Guns take on Pat Benatar’s 1983 hit “Love Is a Battlefield.”

As I said yesterday, when an artist decides to cover a song, they have to find a way to make the song sound like an original. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. Robots With Ray Guns’ cover of “Love Is a Battlefield” works on every level. Shimmering synths that aren’t too shy to flirt with the original coupled with a wispy vocal performance by Patrick Baker, make this one of the best covers to emerge this year. It’s a wonderful tribute to Benatar’s version. Dare I say it, I might like it better than the original. Grab the free download below.

When I hear “The Boy Is Mine” by Brandy and Monica, it instantly takes me back to a time in my life when nothing mattered but music. I was still living at home with my parents and spent all my money at the music store. I can actually remember the very first time I heard it. One afternoon, the music store I used to frequent was playing “The Boy Is Mine” on the sound system, and I was hooked. Anyway, the song, which was released in May of 1998, spent a staggering thirteen weeks on top of the US Billboard Hot 100 during the summer of ’98. This is one remix you don’t want to pass up.

Released in October of 1989, “Another Day In Paradise” was the first single to be taken from Phil Collins’ number-one album …But Seriously. The song, which was about the plight of homelessness, eventually became one of the most successful songs of his solo career. I love hearing a classic remixed and transformed into something new, and that is just what German DJ Nico Pusch has done with his mix. Be sure to download it while you can!

I wasn’t a fan of Britney Spears’ new single, “Work Bitch,” so it is no surprise to me that it’s dropping down the charts pretty quickly. But this mashup created by DJ DigiMark is fantastic! It has actually turned me into a fan! The mashup features Britney’s “Work Bitch,” Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “Relax” and RuPaul’s “Supermodel (You Better Work).” You can download the song in exchange for a ‘like’ on Facebook! One of the most popular industrial bands of the 1980′s, Belgian electronic music group Front 242 struck gold with the release of the single “Headhunter” in 1988. The song, which was recently named the greatest industrial song of all time by COMA Music Magazine, is one of my all time favorite club songs. After hearing the original version of “Dark Horse,” I was left feeling underwhelmed. Actually, that would be an understatement, but the new Country Club Martini Crew remix of the song has turned me into a fan. Now they just need to edit out Juicy J! Grab the free download here. Katy Perry is due to release her third studio album ‘Prism’ next month (Oct. 22nd).

Way back in 1997, Scottish DJ, Alexis ‘Lex’ Blackmore scored a big hit in the United Kingdom with “Remember Me” under the pseudonym Blue Boy. The track, which heavily samples “Woman of the Ghetto” by Marlena Shaw, was remixed by Sure Is Pure and picked up for release after appearing on the compilation album Mushroom Jazz Volume One in 1996. I have always loved this song, so it is great to get an updated version for my workouts. Grab the free download below.
