Update 7/7/14: The rumors were true! Amelia will release her new single, “California,” on August 25 via East West Records, which is owned by Warner Music Group. You can watch a lyric video for the single at the bottom of this post.
Following a series of regrettable false starts, English pop singer Amelia Lily, who finished third in the eighth series of The X Factor UK in 2011, has reportedly signed a new deal with Warner to release her debut album.
Amelia’s debut record, which should be released later this year, is rumored to be spearheaded by the single “California.” According to Amelia, more details on the release will be announced very soon.
In February of 2012, Amelia signed a record deal with Sony subsidiary Xenomania and began work on her debut studio album. Xenomania is, of course, the highly successful production and songwriting team behind some of pop music’s most memorable songs, like the Pet Shop Boys’ Love etc., Sugababes’ “Round Round” and Girls Aloud’s “Sound of the Underground.”
All signs pointed to Amelia making a pretty substantial mark on the pop music landscape. After selling 50,000 copies in its first week of release, Lily’s debut single, “You Bring Me Joy”, debuted at number 2 on the UK singles chart, according to the Official Charts Company. Amelia followed up the release of “You Bring My Joy” the following year with the less- than-memorable “Shut Up (and Give Me Whatever You Got)”. The single, which features no less than ten writers, peaked at number eleven. By the time Amelia released her next single, “Party Over”, most of the buzz around her debut album had died out, and the single barely scraped into the Top 40. Following the minor chart success of her singles, Lily was allegedly dropped from Xenomania and her plans for her debut album were ultimately cancelled.
I really hope Warner can do something great with Amelia. I think she is super talented, and “You Bring Me Joy” shows the potential she has for making great pop music.
