Former American Idol contestant Kimberly Caldwell is back with a new single titled “On the Weekend.” Speaking about the song with The Hollywood Reporter, Caldwell says, “I co-wrote it with my buddies Andrew Dixon and Brian Dennis because I kept hearing my sister and friends griping about their nine to five jobs, and realized how crucial the weekend was to their sanity. They are all buttoned up and professional Monday through Friday, then they transform into bad-asses once they clock out. Seemed like they needed a weekend anthem, so they were the inspiration for the song.”
In the same vein as Cyndi Lauper’s iconic hit “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” “On the Weekend” is a simple, but undeniably catchy ode to the fun that a weekend can bring. The charming production is glossy enough to warm up nicely to pop radio, but make no mistake about it; this isn’t your everyday pop song. The arrangement is fun, uncluttered, and best of all, it assists the song in invoking a real sense of release.
As we have seen countless times before (yeah, I am looking at you, LMFAO), a song about having fun and letting loose can come across as tacky and unnecessary. Thankfully, in Caldwell’s hands, it’s tasteful, interesting and empowering. In a perfect world, all pop music would be this entertaining.
“On the Weekend” is out now on iTunes.
