You may remember me singing the praises of Seattle-based indie-pop trio Barcelona last month. Well, I’ve got good news! Barcelona is back with the follow-up the their previous EP (Love Me) with a brand new EP aptly titled Love You. The EP is the second in a three-part series titled The Melodrama. “The Melodrama is a three-part EP series that explores the landscape of learning to love and be loved. Its stories are told through characters who actually exist, but are exaggerated. Together, they compose, The Melodrama. ”
One of the standout tracks on Love You is the brand new single “Fall In Love.” Although the song doesn’t have a hook as radio friendly as their previous single “Background,” it’s just as memorable for different reasons. Lead vocalist Brian Fennell is a talented singer, requiring no studio gimmicks to make his voice sound pleasing to the ears, so nothing gets in the way of the song and its lyrics. Lead by sparse production that recalls the smooth R&B sound of the 90s, the slow-burning “Fall In Love” hits all the right emotional marks. In the verses, he uses his voice to appropriately convey his desire to be with the someone regardless of the outcome. There’s a vulnerability and sense of longing here that cuts straight to the heart, but there is also a determined compulsion to pursue what he wants.
Fennell expertly projects the inner turmoil that accompanies the disquieting realization that he wants a relationship to turn into something more than just another casual fling, which concludes with the reflection, “I don’t wanna hold you down, dear. Trying to make it so clear. Hoping that we fall in love.”
“Fall In Love” is out right now on iTunes.
