M.I.A. has announced that she is parting ways with Jay Z`s Roc Nation. “I`m leaving Roc Nation. Thank (you) to everyone who supported the MIA Matangi Lp. Happy new year. 2014,” MIA wrote on Twitter. The rapper officially signed to Roc Nation management in May 2012, but the honeymoon didn’t last long. M.I.A., 38, first discussed her label woes in July of last year, tweeting: “I’ve been blacklisted through normal channels.”
M.I.A. released her latest studio album, Matangi, last year. Despite receiving generally positive reviews from music critics, Matangi only sold around 15,000 copies, becoming her lowest charting album worldwide. In the United States, the controversial U.K. singer/songwriter could easily be classified as a one-hit wonder. Her lone top 100 hit came in 2008 with the release of “Paper Planes.” The song, which peaked at number 4, has since been certified 3x platinum by the RIAA.
