The 100 Best Singles of 2014

It may be a little too early for a year-end list, but I figured, why not? Following the abysmal year for pop music that was 2013, the last thing I expected from 2014 was the tsunami of outstanding pop songs that the year ended up delivering. 2014 introduced me to an enormous amount of new talent, including French pop music project Christine and the Queens, YouTube star and recent RocNation signee Alexa Goddard, the amazingly talented singer-songwriter LP, and moody pop singer Banks. The year also ushered in the welcome return of some very iconic names in pop music: Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue, legendary disco producer Giorgio Moroder, synth pop pioneers Erasure, and controversial singer Sinéad O’Connor, among others. Now don’t get me wrong, 2014 had its fair share of questionable pop moments, The Chainsmokers’ “Selfie” comes to mind; as well as the restlessly annoying “Rude” from Canadian reggae band Magic!. But overall, the year has proven to be a standout for pop music.

In this post, you will find some songs that radio couldn’t stop playing, but a sizeable portion of the artists in my Top 100 Singles of 2014 were either totally ignored by radio in America or never even released their music stateside. Now, more than ever, top 40 and adult contemporary stations have little interest in exploring territory outside of their own static comfort zone. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for artists who bring something different to the table to build an audience. I think this is why more and more people have been turning off the radio and moving away from traditional outlets. Music lovers are focusing their attention elsewhere, like music blogs, podcasts, etc. By sharing my 100 favorite songs from the year, I hope to not only document what I consider to be the best of the best, I genuinely hope to introduce you to a few tracks you might have missed otherwise.

Now, onto the list. I wanted to make it as accurate as possible, so I made sure to evaluate all the music I discovered over the year. As with any list of this nature, it is all subjective, based solely on my own personal taste.
